InnovateHealth Africa Publishes Inaugural Report on the State of Digital Health Readiness in the African Health Workforce

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, investment in digital health is accelerating. Electronic health records, mobile health platforms, telemedicine, and AI-enabled clinical tools are being introduced at increasing pace and scale. Yet a critical question remains: is the health workforce structurally prepared to operate within this rapidly evolving digital health environment?

The State of Digital Health Readiness in the African Health Workforce Report addresses this question through a comprehensive regional assessment of the conditions shaping digital health workforce readiness and the realities of how health workers are engaging with digital health in practice.

Drawing on Global Digital Health Monitor workforce indicators, WHO National Health Workforce Accounts, peer-reviewed literature, and national digital health strategy data spanning 48 countries, the report brings together evidence that has often been examined separately. It presents a structured analytical framework, a comprehensive synthesis of the available evidence, and actor-specific recommendations for governments, health systems, development partners, professional bodies, and other stakeholders.

Importantly, the report establishes a measurable baseline for understanding digital health workforce readiness in Africa and provides a foundation for tracking progress as countries continue to invest in digital transformation.

InnovateHealth Africa acknowledges the leadership of its Executive Director, Oluwatobi ADEWUMI, who led the development of the report, and the dedication of the Research and Development Team, led by Shamsuddeen Yusuf MA'ARUF and comprising Omolabake Salako, Raphael Oyeniji, Micheal Adeniyi, and Sulaimon Araromi. Their rigour and intellectual commitment are reflected throughout the publication.

We are equally grateful to our external reviewers,Temi Filani and Olutola Vivian Adewumi, whose critical engagement strengthened the final version of the report.

We welcome opportunities to discuss the findings and support the use of this evidence base across research, policy, and practice.
